ALBANY – The New York State Board
of Historic Preservation has recommended the addition of three Hudson
Valley properties to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
Walter Beckwith House in Stanford has been nominated. The facility reflects
the success of dairy farmer Walter Beckwith, who, in 1876, built a Second
Empire-style house and carriage house.
Cottage in the Pines in Deerpark, built around 1895, is an example of
the Shawangunk Mountain boarding house, which provided less expensive
accommodations than hotels or resorts.
Main School in Hillburn, also nominated, is significant as the focus of
a prominent school desegregation battle in 1943, when a coalition of black
parents joined with the NAACP to successfully gain black students’
admittance to the new and improved school facilities from which they were
excluded.
Statewide, a total of 26 properties, resources and districts were nominated
in this latest round.
