NEWBURGH – Outspoken community activist Omari Shakur is going to run for mayor of Newburgh. He ran unsuccessfully for the top city job several years ago. He will make his formal announcement next week.
Shakur has been critical of Newburgh government for years and has alleged
police brutality and police threats against himself.
He lost his own adult son to a firefight with city police officers.
Shakur’s mother, Lillie Howard, a community activist in her own right, also ran for mayor in the past and at a recent city council meeting said she might consider another run for the top post.
