SPRING VALLEY – Saying that everyone deserves to live in safe, clean housing, Rockland County Executive Edwin Day on Thursday announced an initiative to combat illegal housing and overcrowding in the county.
Speaking in Spring Valley, Day said the health and safety of all county
residents is“the highest priority” of his administration.
“We are utilizing the health codes and the sanitary code to enforce the laws, and the laws are simply this – we want people to have safe housing,” he said. “We look at landlords who are simply motivated by greed and making money in exchange for that to put people’s lives at risk, and that is something we are determined to stop.”
Day said the unsafe housing problem can be found in all corners of Rockland County and the law allows for a maximum fine of $2,000 per day for each violation.
Violations may be reported anonymously online.
