TOWN OF RAMAPO – The Manny Welder Park in the Town of Ramapo was closed Sunday afternoon after four bears took up residence there and several spectators gathered to watch.
Town police posted officers at the park for the safety of residents and the State Department of Environmental Conservation was called in.
Police remind the public that bears are part of the area. They advised that if you encounter a bear, do not approach or corner the animal. If they are near you, walk away and permit them to escape.
If need be, the police will try disperse the animals. If one is posing an imminent threat to human life, police said they will have no choice but to kill the bear.
