CORTLANDT – Officials from the Town
of Cortlandt and neighboring Northern Westchester municipalities Thursday
called on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to reconsider the conditional
certificate it granted earlier this month for the Spectra Energy Algonquin
pipeline project.
The pipeline would be replaced with a larger diameter pipe and be rerouted to cause a danger to nearby facilities, Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi said.
“It will go in close proximity to one of our schools; about 400 young children are in the Buchanan-Verplank Elementary School. We are very, very concerned about that,” Puglisi said.   “It goes closer to Indian Point, the two nuclear plants that are in the Village of Buchanan and the Town of Cortlandt and we are upset about that, concerned about those potential hazards.  It is being rerouted and goes closers to a lot of homeowners’ properties and commercial properties.”
The oil line runs from Pennsylvania through the Mid-Hudson north to Massachusetts.
