WASHINGTON – US Senator Charles Schumer is calling on his colleagues in the Congress to quickly approve an extension until 2019 of the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Without that, when the program expires in September, children would not have access to low-cost health insurance this summer.
Statewide there are close to 275,000 children enrolled in the program. In the Hudson Valley alone, there are an estimated 37,100 children in the program.
“When it comes to something as important as health care, we cannot allow a situation to arise in which children cannot get the checkup or prescription they need because their family cannot afford the payments or insurance,” Schumer said
The Children’s Health Insurance Program is a federal-state partnership that allows middle class families to access affordable health care coverage for their children. The program provides coverage for families whose income is too high for Medicaid, but above the poverty level.
