KINGSTON – The owners of the Hudson
Valley Resort and Pine Grove Resort Ranch are keeping their fingers crossed
that the state legislature and governor will allow them to install video
lottery terminals at their facilities, both in the Town of Rochester.
The Ulster County Legislature Tuesday night voted to ask the state to allow both resorts to operate a limited number of those VLTs in the wake of no full-scale casino being approved in the county.
The Nevele was in contention for a state gaming license, but only the Empire Resorts project in Sullivan County was granted one.
Rochester Town Supervisor Carl Chipman supports VLTs for both Hudson Valley and Pine Grove, but not at the Nevele, which he said would install 1,000 machines.
“What we want to do at our resorts is make it an amenity for guests, not to be a casino, not to bring in the local people, but to bring people into the area and to make it part of their resort experience,” Chipman said.
The other two resorts want a lesser number to incorporate them into the total experience, he said.
Among the proposals for the law change officials would like to see is a “Rewards Dollars” debit card program where guests could spend their earnings in Ulster County before heading home.
