ELLENVILLE – The Ellenville Million committee, established to recommend how to spend $1 million in funds from Ulster County to rejuvenate the Ellenville/Wawarsing area, has come up with a five-point plan of concentration.
County Executive Michael Hein created the fund to breathe new economic
life into the area since a proposed state-approved gaming casino at the
former Nevele Hotel was shot down.
Ellenville Million Committee Chairwoman Julie Cohen Lonstein, a local
attorney, said they want to capitalize on the area’s natural resources
since there is no industry.
“We want to promote an economic rebirth in our community and bring more businesses in,” Lonstein said.  “We have empty storefronts. We have the most beautiful, picturesque Main Street that any postcard could attempt to copy and we want to see those empty storefronts filled and we want to see people walking along the sidewalks and going into the businesses and keeping their business local.”
As a result of community input, the committee has established subcommittees on tourism/agritourism, industry, energy, Main Street and branding/marketing/public relations.
