POUGHKEEPSIE – The temporary housing
pods at the Dutchess County Jail are just about ready to be occupied as
county officials make long-term plans to build a new, permanent jail at
the same site in the City of Poughkeepsie.
County Executive Marcus Molinaro said the new facility will be more than just a larger warehouse for inmates.
“Our job is to ensure that the inmate in our care has access to their attorneys, has access to service and resource so that when they reenter the community they don’t commit crime again, so by creating the right structure, by providing the right service, we know we can drive down recidivism,” he said.
Molinaro said those inmates dealing with mental health issues will be treated as patients, not inmates.  That will reduce costs and recidivism.
That’s a point that has frequently been made by Democrat County Legislator Joel Tyner.
