TOWN OF WALLKILL – The much anticipated tunnel under NY Route 17 in the Town of Wallkill that will connect the Galleria at Crystal Run with the Orange Plaza is now expected to be completed months ahead of planned.
The state will pay for the work, which was expected to be finished in time for the Christmas holiday season at the end of the year, but now, it looks like it will be done this coming fall, said Town Supervisor Daniel Depew.
When finished, the tunnel should take traffic off Route 211 and thereby take pressure off the environment, he said.
“I also think it is going to change the foot traffic of the consumer population in this region making properties on Dunning Road, that have been stagnant for development much more successful,” Depew said. “It will in time, probably lead to a further economic boon to those properties in the future.”
The town had originally been slated to foot the bill for the tunnel work,
but Depew negotiated with the state for it to pay for the project.
