NEW YORK – The Sleep apnea testing
of employees of the Metro-North Railroad, who are involved in onboard
train operations has begun.
Railroad Chief of Security and Safety Ann Kirsch briefed the committee’s monthly meeting on Monday, saying it will take some time to complete.
“Our obstructive sleep apnea pilot program has begun with screening of employees last week,” Kirsch said.  “That will be ongoing for several months, but we have started the screening and we look forward to working through the results of that and sharing any progress along the way.”
The testing program was instituted after the December 2013 Bronx train derailment that killed four people when the engineer reportedly fell asleep at the switch due to undiagnosed sleep apnea.
