NEW YORK – The installation of the positive train control system on the Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road lines is moving forward.
The early warning system that will serve as an electronic safety net
for train engineers, is being advanced on the Metro-North system, Patrick
Nowakowski, Long Island Rail Road’s president told the board of
both railroads on Monday.
“The installation of transponders has been initiated on Metro-North,” Nowakowski said.  “That is a test application and we will use that to test to make sure that the attachment devices that we use to both wood and concrete ties meet the test in terms of vibration and that type of stuff so they are not disturbed in any way, shape or form.”
Implementation of the positive train control technology became a top priority following the Bronx derailment in December 2013 when the train barreled around a dangerous curve, derailing and killing four people.
