RED HOOK – Fire Friday morning at a barn on Hateman Hill Road in
the Town of Red Hook leveled a 180-foot by 35 foot barn. Some 100 goats
inside perished; there were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians,
said Fire Chief Rick Hillbrandt.
The fire was called in shortly before 1 a.m. and firefighters were on
the scene until 6:30.
The cause is unknown and under investigation by the Dutchess County Cause
and Origin Team.

Hillbrandt, who was the first firefighter on the scene, said the roof
had collapsed by the time he arrived.

Because there was no water source in the immediate area, they had truck
water in.

“That’s why I had so many mutual aid companies because we
had to tank water in from the village hydrants. There is no water source
out there. If we could find a pond out there, there would so much ice
trying to cut through to get water,” he said.
Tivoli, Rhinebeck and Milan were on the scene under mutual aid while
Pine Plains and Hillside were on standby.
