Joan C. Alongi
Saturday, October 19th, 1935  Monday, April 8th, 2024

Joan Claire Alongi, 88, a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2024, at the home she shared with her daughter and son in law. She was surrounded by love with her family at her side.

Born October 19, 1935, she was the daughter of Mabel Inez (Leonard) & John “Jack” Lynch. With the exception of a few years spent in Alaska, while her husband was serving in the US Air Force, New York was her home & she spent most of her years in Poughkeepsie. She graduated from Poughkeepsie HS and went on to earn her RN from St. Francis Hospital.

While in nursing school she met and fell in love with Ralph Alongi, the good-looking Italian boy that captured her Irish heart. They went on to marry September 21, 1958. The two were blessed with four children – John (Jenn), Mark (Jenn), Anthony (Carolyn) and Ann Marie (John). Soon thereafter, her family grew (and grew). She was a dedicated Mother, Mom-Mom and Great-Grandma. Above all, Joan considered her family her greatest accomplishment.

Nursing was a natural fit for Joan. She worked at The Hudson River State Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Carillon and Eden Park Nursing Homes. Joan retired as a nursing supervisor, but she never stopped giving orders! Her kind and gentle soul made her the perfect caregiver.

Whether it was a dinner out, a trip to the library, Saturday rummikub or an afternoon of shopping, Joan was always ready to go! She was fondly known as the “Gypsy from Poughkeepsie” because she enjoyed getting out and being around people! Joan was a member of St. Rita’s, The Red Hatters, and the Poughkeepsie Seniors Club, just to name a few.

In addition to her children and their families, she is survived by her brother Victor Leonard, her sister-in-law Phyllis Alongi, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her husband and soulmate, Ralph, her brothers William, Donald, Fred and her sisters Edna, Nancy Ann, and Mary.

Calling hours will be held Sunday April 14th, 2024, from 2 to 5pm at the William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home Inc., located at 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, April 15th, 2024, at 10am at St. Mary’s Church located at 231 Church Street in Poughkeepsie. She will be laid to rest immediately following at St. Peter’s Cemetery located at 171 Salt Point Turnpike Poughkeepsie, NY.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hudson Valley Hospice located at 374 Violet Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 or www.hvhospice.org.
