GOSHEN – The Orange County Board of Elections has ruled as invalid county executive candidate Ali Muhammad’s

petitions to run on the Democratic line in November.

He has appealed the decision to State Supreme Court, which will hear arguments later this week.

If his appeals are rejected, Muhammad could still seek to form a local independent line and would have to submit petitions signatures between May 18 and 25.

If that were to fail, incumbent Republican Steven Neuhaus will run unopposed in the November general election.

On Monday, Muhammad’s camp issued a statement saying the “serial Republican and Democratic objectors” who challenged his petitions have employed a “tactic (that) can be dated back to the 1800s during the Reconstruction Period, where mostly economically-challenged people didn’t represent the government.”
