LONG ISLAND – Governor Andrew Cuomo, Wednesday, announced that former Google CEO Eric Schmidt would join his team to turn the economy back on, but in a new and improved fashion.

Cuomo called Schmidt “a visionary” who he said would aid the state on how to use new technology for the economy going forward.

Schmidt said he would start by targeting telehealth, remote learning and broadband.

“We can take this terrible disaster and accelerate all of those ways that will make things much, much better,” he said. “The solutions that we have to come up with have to help the people most in need, people in different situations throughout the state. We have to consider all of them and not pick one or the another,” he said. “So the intent is to be very inclusive and make this thing better. We need to look for solutions that can be presented now and be accelerated and use technology to make things better.”

In his daily COVID-19 briefing on Wednesday, Cuomo said the June 23 primary election will be a conducted as a combination of in-person voting and mailed in absentee ballots offered to everyone. He said if it were up to him, he would opt for the mailed in ballot to avoid contracting the virus while standing on line.

Noting it will take longer to count the ballots with so many being absentee, Melissa DeRosa, the secretary to the governor, said not all elections results would be finalized and available the night of the primary.
