Saugerties man charged following serious personal injury accident

SAUGERTIES – A two-car crash on Route 9W in Barclay Heights resulted in a woman being seriously injured and a man charged with DWI, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and leaving the scene of a serious personal injury auto accident.

Saugerties Police were called to the accident around 6:38 a.m. on Friday, March 31 with a report of one person trapped and the driver of the other vehicle fleeing the scene on foot.

Both vehicles, a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup and a 2008 Ford Taurus SUV, had sustained heavy damage.

Noone was located in the truck, but a woman, identified as Suzanne Mann, 48, of Highland, was fo0und unconscious and trapped in the Ford.

Firefighters from the Glasco Fire Department extricated her with the Jaws of Life. She was treated at the scene by paramedics from Diaz Ambulance and flown by LifeNet to Albany Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition and undergoing surgery as of Friday night, police said.

Saugerties officers located the driver of the pickup, identified as 45-year-old Alfredo Martinez, who was found hiding in his home on Village Drive in the Town of Saugerties.

Martinez, who sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention, was processed at police headquarters. A court order was secured to obtain a blood sample since he refused to submit to a chemical test.

Hye was later charged and released to his attorney pending future court action.

Route 9W was closed to traffic for 5 ½ hours as authorities conducted a crash reconstruction investigation.
