Arlington High School Winterguard claim gold at WGI World Championships

LAGRANGEVILLE- Arlington High School’s Winterguard team has triumphed in a spectacular display of talent and dedication, seizing the gold medal at the Winter Guard International (WGI):  Sport of the Arts World Championships. The competition spanned multiple days across arenas in Southwest Ohio with the top groups performing in Finals competition to a packed house at the University of Dayton Arena. The team’s remarkable journey culminated in a stunning performance, earning them a score of 97.99 capping an undefeated season spanning four months of competition. 

Outshining 115 formidable competitors across three rounds of performances, Arlington High School’s Winterguard swept each stage of the championship with unparalleled finesse and artistry. Joining Arlington in the Finals competition were teams from as far as California, Texas, Georgia, and Illinois. Arlington was the only team from New York to qualify for the final round of competition. Their show, “Lizzie,” captivated audiences with its powerful narrative, delving into the complex tale of Lizzie Borden and her tumultuous relationship with her family, her trial, and the enduring scrutiny she faced after the infamous 1892 crime. 

Comprising 20 exceptionally talented members, Arlington High School’s Winterguard mesmerized judges and spectators with their compelling portrayal, set to a captivating power ballad soundtrack. Their flawless execution and emotive storytelling propelled them to their first-ever World Championships title in the Arlington Winterguard’s illustrious five-decade history. 

The journey to victory was marked by unwavering determination and countless hours of tireless rehearsal, spanning a grueling season with full days of competitions most weekends. Each member of the Winterguard dedicated themselves to perfecting their craft, resulting in an undefeated streak that underscored their exceptional skill and commitment. 

In the climactic final performance, Arlington left an indelible impression, eliciting a thunderous ovation from the thousands-strong audience, who rose to their feet in appreciation of the team’s

extraordinary performance. Members participated in an Olympic style finale and medal ceremony receiving their gold medals. 

“The performers were extremely well prepared for their moment on the big stage and seized the title by their sheer will and determination, never once being intimidated by the giant crowd that was on their feet cheering for them,” said Albert Cousins, the Director of the Arlington High School winterguard. “The kids are champions and our hearts are bursting with pride for all that the staff, families and performers have done to make this moment happen.” 

As Arlington High School’s Winterguard celebrates their well-deserved triumph, they stand as a shining example of the transformative power of hard work, passion, and collaboration. The winterguard is under the Direction of designer Albert (Bert) Cousins along with Euni Shim, who is also a teacher at the Arlington Central School District.
