POMONA – It may be some time before a cause is determined for the fire that completely destroyed the Chabad Synagogue of Pomona Heights on North Ridge Road.

Fire broke out in the 2 ½ -story structure around 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

Ari Rosenblum, CEO of the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County said the entire Jewish community mourns the loss.

“We, of course, as a community are, perhaps more than usual on our guard and aware of what is going on, on our streets. So, when you are on this level of alertness and something like this happens, it is obviously quite troubling,” he said.

No one was believed to have been injured in the pre-dawn fire, but it is believed that the sacred Torah scrolls in the synagogue were destroyed in the blaze.

At about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the fire rekindled, resulting in firefighters returning to the scene to contain it.
