Newburgh Town Councilwoman Betty Greene passes away

TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Long-time Newburgh town public servant Elizabeth” Betty Greene passed away on Friday, April 12.

She previously served as town receiver of taxes for 28 years and currently as town councilwoman.

“Betty loved our community and was a true public servant. As the town councilwoman she was the liaison to many departments, the Town of Newburgh Ambulance Corp., Bureau of Fire Safety and the Recreation Department,” her obituary read.

She also served as a life member of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 1420, and a member of the Town of Newburgh Republican Committee, having been named Woman of the Year in 1996.

Fellow town councilman Scott Manley called Greene’s passing “very sad news and a huge loss for our community.”

“This is a major loss for the Greene family, as well as the entire community and our department,” the Town of Newburgh PBA said. “Betty spent her entire life giving back to her community and was a tremendous supporter of our police department.”

Calling hours will be held at the Cronomer Valley Fire Department, 296 North Plank Road in Newburgh on Wednesday, April 17 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 18 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart R.C. Church on Robinson Avenue with Fr. William Scafidi officiating.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in New Windsor.
