NEWBURGH – The cause of the fire that destroyed apartment buildings at 59 and 61 Carter Street in the City of Newburgh Monday night remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious in nature, fire officials said Tuesday.

Nine-year-old Anthony Trujillo is credited with saving his family, who was living in 59 Carter. He woke everyone up after the fire broke out with everyone escaping safely.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the 24 residents who were displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the city fire investigation team.

The fire was reported at about 11:20 p.m. in the rear of 59 Carter and spread to the interior of the buildings.

The three-alarm fire was declared under control just before 2 a.m.

One Newburgh firefighter and one occupant sustained minor injuries and were taken to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.

Several area fire departments assisted at the scene.
