NEW WINDSOR – A 60-year-old New Windsor man who had gone hiking with his dog at San Giacomo Park on Thursday morning was reported missing after he did not return home, according to New Windsor Police Chief Dan Valeri.  The hiker’s family had gone to the park and located the man’s vehicle but could not find the hiker or his dog.  The family immediately called New Windsor Police.

At approximately 11:40 a.m., officers responded to the area of San Giacomo Park where they met with family members who reported that Stephen Cobb had gone for a hike with his dog earlier in the morning and had not returned.

Police assembled at the park and launched an extensive search including a New Windsor Police K9 and several officers on foot.  Officers searched the area of Snake Hill and were assisted by the State Police Aviation Unit.

At about 1:38 p.m. the State Police Aviation spotted the hiker who appeared to be injured and the flight crew directed officers on the ground to the man’s location near Little Britain Road.  Police on the ground reached Cobb and his dog and learned that he had been struck by a falling tree and was unable to walk.

Police and New Windsor EMS medics removed Cobb from the woods and he was transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s-Cornwall  Hospital where he was treated for his injuries which included broken ribs, punctured lungs, and a fractured pelvis, authorities said.

The rescued hiker is in stable condition, according to Chief Valeri.
