KINGSTON- Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger has released recommended updates to the county’s Sexual Harassment Prevention Policy which provides clarity on the definition of sexual harassment and enhances training requirements for employees.

Metzger said the policy amendments were made to align with the state’s policy.
The policy updates clarify that sexual harassment does not have to be severe or pervasive to be illegal and that sexual harassment is a form of “gender-based” discrimination.  The amendments also acknowledge that sexual harassment can occur in the remote workplace and add a new section on Bystander Intervention, including an explanation of five standard methods of intervention that can be used if employees witness harassment or discrimination

The updated policy also expands training requirements to include board, commission, committee, and council members and lays out a clear process to act on complaints involving appointed board, commission, committee and council members.

“I have zero tolerance for sexual harassment of any kind in the County government workplace, and these policy amendments strengthen our efforts to prevent workplace harassment and take disciplinary action if it does occur,” said Metzger.  “Importantly, the policy updates make clear that all genders are protected and that sexual harassment does not need to be severe or pervasive to be illegal.  Everyone is entitled to a safe and supportive working environment, and government must lead by example.  It is my hope that the Legislature will move expeditiously to amend this policy.”
