NEWBURGH – A Newburgh Free Academy student sustained what Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jackielynn Manning Campbell called a “superficial slash wound to his lower leg” after two individuals boarded the bus that was taken students home at the end of the school day on Monday.

She did not say where the incident occurred, but said the individuals engaged in an altercation with one student who they appeared to know.

“During an attempt to remove the student from the bus, the student was injured with a superficial slash wound to his lower leg,” the superintendent said.

The injured youth is 17 years old, city officials said.

The bus driver drove straight to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital to get immediate medical treatment for the wounded student who was tended to by staff for non-life-threatening injury, police said.

City detectives are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the detectives at 845-569-7509.
