MONTICELLO- A project to improve the safety and traffic flow at the interchange of Routes 17 and 42 in Monticello is nearing completion.  The project, which was introduced to the public in October of 2021, cost more than $33 million.

The project was needed because, before construction, the Route 42 overpass bridge lacked sidewalks and pedestrians walking between the Village of Monticello and retail stores and medical offices on Route 42 South of the village were required to cross multiple traffic lanes on their journey.  The old configuration also created a bottleneck, especially during the summer months, at traffic lights that controlled the intersections on Route 42.

According to DOT, the new configuration improves traffic flow, pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and vehicular safety.  The project was necessary due to high seasonal summer traffic and an increase in commercial vehicle traffic along the corridor.

Construction involved removing the old cloverleaf interchange, constructing two dual-lane roundabouts, and making upgrades including the installation of new sidewalks, lighting, and drainage.  The project consisted of two phases and construction lasted over two years.

Editor’s Note:  An earlier version of the headline reported the project has been completed.  The project is nearing completion with additional construction activities yet to be finished.
