Editor,

On January 22, we mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court issuing the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.  Now, 51 years later, we are entering a major election year in a post-Roe era.  Sexual and reproductive health care and rights are on the line.

While the anniversary of Roe is a reminder of what we’ve lost, it’s also a chance to remember that Roe was always the floor, not the ceiling.  Hurdles like distance, money, time off work, and other restrictions have stood in the way of people’s health for decades.  In 2024, we must reimagine what is possible for our communities and create a more equitable health care landscape for all.

To pave the way for this future, we need support from all lawmakers to ensure everyone can make their own health care decisions without political interference.  Poll after poll shows voters overwhelmingly support access to abortion.  Elections at all levels of government matter to ensure our representatives will fight for all people to be able to make their own decisions about their body.

It’s not too soon to start planning for this year’s election; Congressional, local, and all New York State Senate and Assembly seats will be on the ballot.  Make sure you, your friends, and family are registered to vote today.  Every ballot counts.  Together, we can continue to secure New York as a haven for sexual and reproductive rights.
