POUGHKEEPSIE – Jalil Smith, the 35-year-old man who stabbed a police officer in the neck with a screwdriver and seriously injured a second officer, has been arrested in the Dutchess County Jail while awaiting sentencing for the attack on the officers.

Smith has been held at the jail while awaiting sentencing before Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin.  In November, according to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Smith attacked another inmate and has been charged with felony assault.  He is scheduled to be arraigned on his latest felony charge in the City of Poughkeepsie Court on December 15, 2023.

Sentencing for the convictions of assaulting the police officers is scheduled to take place before Judge McLoughlin on December 6, 2023.

In September a jury convicted Smith guilty of aggravated assault of a police officer with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault (one for each of the two officers), and criminal possession of a weapon other than a handgun for the long screwdriver he used in the attack.  The jury also found Smith not guilty of criminal possession of a weapon other than a handgun for the pen that police say he also used to try and stab the officers.

Smith has previously served time in state prison after being convicted of weapons possession.
