HYDE PARK – A multi-vehicle accident that included an ambulance sent several people to the hospital on Friday.  The accident occurred on Route 9 in Hyde Park at approximately 10:15 a.m.

Police and fire personnel were dispatched to the accident near the Stewart’s Shop on Albany Post Road (Route 9) for a multi-vehicle accident.

A unit from the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office indicated that two of the three vehicles involved had rolled over and an ambulance from Northern Dutchess Paramedics was involved.  Two of the vehicles had people trapped inside, requiring firefighters from the Fairview and Roosevelt Fire Departments to extricate them.

Additional ambulances were requested to transport the five victims with varying degrees of injuries to local hospitals.  One victim was considered to be in critical condition and the others were all in serious condition.

Portions of the road were closed for more than an hour as accident investigation specialists from the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office worked with the Hyde Park Police to determine the cause.

The initial investigation indicates that the ambulance was heading south when a vehicle from a side road failed to yield and pulled out.  The ambulance and vehicle collided, flipping the car on its side.  The ambulance was forced into oncoming traffic where it collided with the third vehicle.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or has information regarding the crash is asked to contact the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office at 845-486-3800 or the Hyde Park Police Department at 845-229-9340.
