POUGHKEEPSIE – A City of Poughkeepsie police officer overdosed due to a fentanyl exposure during a traffic stop on Wednesday afternoon on Mill Street.

Sources told Mid-Hudson News that the officer had conducted a traffic stop on Mill Street (westbound arterial) in the area of Napa Auto Parts just after 2 p.m. when the situation became deadly.

While performing a search of the vehicle, the officer came into contact with a quantity of fentanyl and moments later began feeling the effects of the poison.

A second officer stayed with the suspect while another officer rushed his partner to MidHudson Regional Hospital for treatment.

The officer was administered Narcan and regained consciousness.

The suspect was arrested on unknown charges and issued an appearance ticket for a future court date.

The officer was released from the hospital after receiving a complete examination
