POUGHKEEPSIE – Veterans, including American Legion Post 37 Commander Nathan “Nate the Great” Grant and Adjutant Kevin Hathorn, joined with elected officials, city firefighters and community members for the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Soldiers Memorial Fountain in Poughkeepsie.

The well-attended event included remarks from Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers, as Congressman Pat Ryan, State Senator Rob Rolison, and Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson joined the audience.  Memorial Day honors soldiers and sailors who died in defense of the United States.  “Today we recognize the gravity of the servicemembers’ sacrifices and the profound impact they have had on our nation’s history and our lives,” Mayor Flowers said.  “Through wars great and small, and also in times of peace, it’s imperative that we come together to remember and reflect on those killed on the battlefields in this country and overseas.”

The Poughkeepsie High School Air Force JROTC served as the Color Guard for the service and one of the students performed the National Anthem.

Commander Grant performed Taps on the bugle to conclude the memorial service.
