WASHINGTON – A West Point graduate of the class of 2005 was killed while fighting with Ukrainian forces on July 29, 2023, according to family and the State Department.

Andrew Webber, 40, supported Ukraine’s independence as a volunteer in that country’s 59th Motorized Brigade, according to LinkedIn and GoFundMe.

He enlisted in the Ukrainian armed forces last May.

While serving in the US Army after his West Point graduation, he served as a chemical officer and infantry officer for a decade, according to Stripes newspaper.

A GoFundMe page created in his memory said Webber was “a trusted friend to many, who continued to build relationships through the years and across distance.”

The post said he was “a veteran education mentor, a relentless patriot and a defender of freedom who valued justice and liberty for others just as much as his own life.”

Webber had earned a law degree from Northwestern University after leaving the US Army and was a corporate attorney in Seattle when he went to Ukraine, according to Stripes.

He was a father of two daughters, Gwen and Vera, and husband to DeeDee.

The other former American serviceman is identified as Ryan O’Leary, who was serving as a company sergeant with Ukrainian ground forces when he was killed by enemy fire, Stripes reported.
