Dear Editor,
I am a Kingston homeowner and a member of Mid-Hudson Valley DSA. Our chapter, as well as our elected officials Legislator Phil Erner and Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha, have endorsed Charlotte Lloyd for City of Kingston Common Council in Ward 1. Here’s why.
Charlotte Lloyd grew up in Ulster County in a working-class family. She graduated from Kingston High School and attended SUNY Ulster, but was unable to finish because of cost. She works three jobs and pays 60% of her income towards rent. Last year, Charlotte joined the Stony Run Tenants Union. Despite her busy schedule she helped canvass her neighbors, recruiting them for tenant union meetings & Rent Guidelines Board hearings. Together they won a historic 15% rent reduction for about 1,200 apartments in Kingston.
There has been a lot of talk about experience in this race. Charlotte has the experience of living, working, and organizing her neighbors in Kingston. That’s the most important kind of experience there is. Vote for Charlotte Lloyd in the Democratic primary! Early voting is happening until June 25 at the Andy Murphy Midtown Neighborhood Center (467 Broadway). Or you can vote on Election Day, June 27 from 6 AM to 9 PM at Edson Elementary School.
