NEWBURGH – A Saturday afternoon fire in an apartment complex on Washington Terrace was reported around 2:00 p.m. Nearly two dozen people were evacuated from the building while city firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.
The City of Newburgh professional firefighters were able to put the kitchen fire out in approximately 20 minutes, with the assistance of surrounding mutual aid departments A source at the scene said the fire started as a result of cooking oil on a stove in a ground-floor apartment of the three-story structure.
The fire was contained to one apartment but several others sustained smoke and water damage.
No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross was alerted to provide emergency assistance to an adult an an 11-year-old child.
