Mayor Joe DeStefano, right, presents a key to the city to Sky's dad, Orlando

MIDDLETOWN – Sky Mendoza is coming back home to Middletown thanks to a total community effort for the young woman.

Sky was involved in a terrible car accident in 2018 that left her pregnant stepmother and baby dead and paralyzed Sky from the neck down.

At the moment, the 17-year-old shares a small apartment with her father and brother in Middletown, but that is going to change.

The community has stepped forward thanks to Spring Lake Toys Foundation, the City of Middletown, Satin Fine Foods, Fini Developers and other companies to construct a fully handicapped-accessible home for Sky and her family at 52 Broad Street.

Spring Lake Toys leader Paulette Laurenzi said everything from the bathroom to the kitchen will be accessible to Sky.

“Orlando Mendoza, her father, has done a tremendous deed,” she said. “He has actually donated, or given back, his one-car garage, so that that can be made into a room for Sky Mendoza, so when Sky has her friends over, she no longer has to sit in her bedroom. She will have a dedicated room to celebrate and party with her friends.”

The land for the home was donated by the city.
