POUGHKEEPSIE – The murder trial of Carlton Belton is scheduled to begin on Friday, February 10, 2023, before Dutchess County Court Judge Jessica Segal.  The 31-year-old Belton is accused of shooting and killing 27-year-old Atiba Proverbs in a Main Street, Poughkeepsie convenience store in June of last year.

The homicide was captured on store surveillance cameras.

A short time after killing Proverbs, Belton, a convicted felon, arrived at a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen during the gunfight.  Belton was treated for his wound a short time after Proverbs passed away from multiple gunshot wounds.  Belton’s felony record is the result of a robbery and weapons convictions after robbing a man at gunpoint in Newburgh in 2013.

The case is being prosecuted by Dutchess County District Attorney Bureau Chief Anthony Parisi.  Belton has retained private counsel to defend him against the charges.
