HAVERSTRAW – Two women were killed early New Year’s morning when the car in which they were riding ran off Beach Road near the kayak launch in the Town of Haverstraw.

Town Police Capt. John Gould, Jr. said the 64-year-old female driver from Haverstraw lost control of the car, which slid off the road crashed through a fence.

A rear seat passenger, a 65-year-old Stony Point woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. An 87-year-old front seat passenger, also a Stony Point resident, was transported to Montefiore Nyack Hospital where she died from her injuries.

Police are withholding the names of the three women pending notification of relations.

The driver was given a field sobriety test as well as an alcohol breath test, both of which were negative.

Police said it appears that the rain and fog were the contributing factors to the tragic accident.

Town of Haverstraw Police were assisted by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office and State Police.
