State issues report to redevelop Downstate Correctional Facility

ALBANY – The State Prison Redevelopment Commission has issued a 140- page report on state plans to market and redevelop all of the prisons it has closed in recent years.

Among them is Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill, a former maximum-security prison that served as a reception center for new inmates the prison system.

Downstate prison was located on 80 acres with 558,000 square feet of building space.

Efforts to redevelop the site include having the state’s Empire State Development Corporation develop a request for proposals, launch a marketing and public relations campaign, create a one-stop website, launch a prison redevelopment fund available to developers, and create municipal technical assistance.

The report also recommended establishing a community engagement

Process to support outreach and leverage workforce development partnerships.
