PORT JERVIS – A second-alarm structure fire in a multi-family Port Jervis house early this morning was quickly brought under control by responding firefighters.  However, the blaze resulted in the loss of pets trapped in a bedroom of the house.

An individual reported the fire at 67 Franklin Street at 7:22 a.m. Units were immediately dispatched to the scene.

While all individuals were reported to be safely out of the house, a dog and cat were reported by the caller to be inside a bedroom in one of the structure’s apartments.

Flames were intense as lines were stretched and the fire fought from within and around the exterior multi-levels of the house.  Within a short time, the body of a dog had been located and removed from the house.  The status of the cat had not been reported as of this post.

Residents of the house were on scene and being assisted by nearby neighbors as firefighters arrived. Red Cross was alerted to assist the families with temporary housing and immediate needs.

No additional injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
