MONTGOMERY – Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties had their Fourth Annual Veterans Celebration in conjunction with National Flag Day at the Thomas Bull Memorial Park.

Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties’ veterans celebration started four years ago with a breakfast, “then the pandemic hit and they had to get creative and this year they wanted to do it outside,” said Kim Warner, director of Social Work and Bereavement for Hospice.

The event was attended and sponsored by many local businesses and organizations including the Marine Corp League Detachment 249 of Greater Newburgh, which is involved in every aspect of veterans, civilian and youth affairs.

They also partner with Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties to provide Last Salutes to veterans who are in hospice, said Hospice Community Outreach Director Janice Valentino.

“We take care of a lot of veterans at the end of life and we believe it is never too late to thank a veteran, so we make sure part of their care is to be recognized and thanked for their service,” she said.

Vincent Serrano, the senior vice commandant of the Marine Corps League Detachment said to him, “Flag Day means freedom, that’s what we all aspire to protect.”

Montgomery Town Supervisor Brian Maher thanking all the veterans in attendance.  He expressed that he was proud to host the event in Montgomery, and this type of event is “another opportunity for the Town of Montgomery Community to say thank you to our veterans.”
