GOSHEN – Andrew Goodenough, the 41-year-old New Windsor man who stabbed a fellow shopper to death in the Vails Gate ShopRite supermarket on June 11, 2016, was sentenced in Orange County Court on Monday to 20 years to life in state prison.

Goodenough admitted to stabbing and killing 35-year-old Michael Kohus of Highland Falls while both were shopping there.

Authorities found no prior interaction between the two men, but in his written plea agreement, Goodenough maintained Kohus had threatened him in the past, but acknowledged the victim was not threatening him, or posing any imminent threat to him at the time of the stabbing.

“The victim in this case lost his life in a random encounter with a defendant who killed him for absolutely no discernable reason,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “My deepest condolences go out to family and friends of the victim, who must live with the fact that their loved one was killed when doing nothing more provocative than simply grocery shopping on a Saturday. Andrew Goodenough’s actions on that day were reprehensible and he knew at the time that what he was doing was wrong.’
