Single-family residence that burned had 11 bedrooms and 25 residents

HILLCREST – A fire in a single-family home at 48 West Hickory Street in Hillcrest a week ago had 11 bedrooms and up to 25 people living in the building.

As Hillcrest volunteer firefighters were responding, they received calls that people were trapped and jumping from windows.

When firefighters arrived, everyone had evacuated, and searches of the building determined everyone was out.

Three residents were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The fire was quickly knocked down.

Hillcrest Fire Company was assisted by the Spring Valley, Monsey, and Nanuet fire departments and Thiells and New City on standby.

Ramapo Police provided assistance along with several EMS units. The Red Cross was on the scene to assist residents find shelter.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
