FISHKILL – A 70-year-old Hopewell Junction man is in critical condition after being struck by a car on Route 9 in Fishkill on Friday evening.   Southbound Route 9 was closed for several hours while the Town of Fishkill and State Police conducted an accident reconstruction.

Fishkill Police Lieutenant Paul Schettino told Mid-Hudson News that the 6:55 p.m. accident on February 18 happened on the southbound side of Route 9 near the intersection of West Merritt Boulevard.  “Our officers were on the scene within minutes of being dispatched and were able to locate the unconscious man lying in the roadway.  Together with EMS personnel, our officers assisted in getting the victim transported to St. Luke’s-Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh for treatment of apparent serious injuries.”

Schettino said the preliminary investigation indicates that the man, with no permanent address, was crossing Route 9 with several other people when he was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by a 37-year-old Wappingers Falls woman.  “The pedestrians were crossing Route 9 in an easterly direction, without a designated crosswalk, and in an area without street lighting.”

The victim was transferred to Westchester Medical Center for treatment and is listed in critical condition.

“The accident is still under investigation and we are asking for anyone that may have witnessed it to contact the Fishkill Police Department at 845-831-1110,” Schettino said.  Joining State Police and Fishkill cops at the scene were the Village of Fishkill Police, Rombout and Fishkill fire departments, and Mobile Life Support Services.
