FISHKILL – US Army Corporal Marcello Scrudato, assigned to the military special forces at Fort Bragg, NC was killed in an accident in January.  His remains were returned to Dutchess County with honors.

Scrudato, 24, died in a motor vehicle accident in North Carolina on January 29.  The soldier’s body was returned to New York on Wednesday evening.  A unit of New York State Troopers escorted his body from JFK Airport to the McHoul Funeral Home on Wednesday night, with many fire departments lining the route to pay their respects to the John Jay High School graduate.

On Thursday morning, a procession, led by members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, will escort the hero’s body from McHoul’s Fishkill location to the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery for cremation.  Multiple law enforcement agencies and fire departments are expected to line the streets along the route to pay their respects.  The procession is expected to begin in Fishkill at 9:30 a.m.

Thursday’s procession is being organized by Acting Dutchess County Sheriff Kirk Imperati.  “It is during this somber occasion that we take a small opportunity to honor a Dutchess County resident, Corporal Marcello Scrudato, who lost his life while on active service, protecting our nation in the US Army,” Imperati said.  In addition to thanking all of the agencies and civilians paying their respects on Thursday, Imperati added “We take this opportunity to thank Corporal Scrudato for his service and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
