MONTICELLO – Monticello Village Police arrested a Woodbourne man on January 30 and again on February 2. William Staesser, 28,  was released after the first incident under the state’s bail reform laws, but after the second arrest, he was committed to the Sullivan County Jail on high bail.

On Sunday, January 30, Staesser was charged with the felonies of four counts of forgery, two counts of grand larceny, and tampering with physical evidence. He was also charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of drugs.

That arrest stemmed from the theft of a credit and debit card from a parked car on North Street while the owner was attending the funeral for firefighter William “Billy” Steinberg.

Staesser used the stolen card to make purchases at several businesses in Monticello and also at Walmart in the Town of Thompson.

When arrested, he was found in possession of a small amount of crack cocaine which he tried to conceal in his mouth.

On Tuesday, February 2, he was arrested again by Monticello Police on felony charges of grand larceny and two counts of forgery for stealing a debit card from a vehicle on Bank Street during the evening. He used the stolen cards to make purchases.

This time he was remanded on $15,000 cash bail, $25,000 bail bo0nd, or $40,000 secured insurance bond.

Back on December 9, 2021, Staesser was arrested by Monticello cops and charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property for stealing two credit cards from a vehicle on West Broadway.

In that incident, the owner of the car caught him in the act and detained him until the police arrived.

After that arrest, he was released on an appearance ticket.
