NEWBURGH – South Middle School in the City of Newburgh was on “lockout” following a report of a gunshot near the facility.

Police are investigating the incident that reportedly occurred shortly after 12 noon on Friday.

The “lockout” was lifted just before 1 p.m. on Friday.

Investigators were seen in the area and said two shell casings were found on South Renwick Street. It was unknown if they had anything to do with the reported gunshot near the school.

A school district memo to staff said during a lockout, all exterior doors and windows are locked, lights and blinds are left as they are, classroom instruction continues as normal, there are no outdoor activities.

The Newburgh Enlarged Central School District has canceled all activities scheduled for the weekend, due to the impending storm.
