NEWBURGH – As an ice storm was forecast to move through the Mid-Hudson Valley Saturday, the Giron family became the new recipients of a historic home on 187 North Miller Street in the City of Newburgh, which was rehabilitated by Habitat of Humanity of Greater Newburgh.
“Everybody from Habitat has been able to make her dream a reality,” said Jesus Giron, while translating for his mother, Teresa.
The family will soon go through the closing process on the five-bedroom house, which was built in 1890.
“Very grateful to God,” said Teresa Giron, through her son.
The house is the 102nd to be dedicated by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh during the last 22 years, and the fifth completed since the beginning of the Covid pandemic.
“This is what Habitat for Humanity in Newburgh has been accustomed to working with,” said Matt Arbolino, executive director, “which is a historic rehab.”
The Girons will be moving in after closing on a mortgage and putting in sweat equity into its rehab.
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that we are giving houses away,” said Arbolino. “We are actually an affordable homeownership program, so the family, on top of putting sweat equity into the house, doing construction on the property and other properties, they will also purchase the house with an affordable mortgage.”
And as the year comes to a close, Teresa Giron is looking forward being a first-ever homeowner and living in the home with her family in 2022.
“Everybody is very happy and looking forward to moving in,” said Jesus Giron, “we’re close to the end of the line.”
