GOSHEN – A Montgomery man has been indicted by an Orange County grand jury on three counts of murder and arson in connection with the death of a man who died of smoke inhalation after he had been rescued from a fire at his Montgomery home in June 2021.

It is alleged that after Ryan Veloce, 32, had slept overnight at 45-year-old Kevin Horan’s residence at 22 Barron Road in the Town of Montgomery, from the evening of Wednesday, June 9 into the morning of June 10, he intentionally set fire to the residence by igniting a flammable liquid he had poured on the floor of the bedroom where he had been sleeping.

It is also alleged that Veloce left the house after setting it on fire, knowing that the three people were still sleeping inside, unaware of the fire.

In addition to the murder and assault charges, Veloce was also charged with reckless endangerment, and arson pertaining to the two surviving occupants of the house, who had escaped the fire y going through windows.

When firefighters were alerted to the fire, they found the house smoke filled and on fire. Horan was rescued from the living room where he was administered medical aid, including CPR, until an ambulance arrived and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It was later determined he died of smoke inhalation.

An investigation of the blaze, conducted by fire inspectors, led to the arrest of Veloce.

If convicted, he faces up to life in prison without parole.
