KINGSTON – The Wurts Street Bridge, which has been closed since September 2020 for safety reasons, will receive a $44.6 million rehabilitation thanks to the state.

State and local officials gathered on Friday to celebrate the news that the 100-year-old Kingston-Port Ewen Suspension Bridge will be brought back to life and reopen the connector between Kingston and the Town of Esopus.

Improvements planned for the bridge include a new bridge deck, guide rails, sidewalks, railings and suspender cables. The bridge’s load capacity will be increased to 20 tons and sidewalks will be widened to meet current standards. The bridge will also receive a fresh coat of paint.

The chambers, where the main cables are anchored, will have state-of-the-art climate control systems to control moisture and ensure the anchorages remain free from corrosion. The controls will have remote monitoring and operational systems.

State Secretary of State Rossana Rosado also said the $11.6 million Kingston Roundabout project has been completed. That reconstructed intersection connects Interstate 587 (Col. Chandler Drive), Route 32 (Albany Avenue) and Broadway in the City of Kingston.
