NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh is teaming up with Orange County to study COVID-19 before an outbreak.

City Manager Todd Venning told the city council Monday night the project will be conducted over a number of weeks.

“The city is participating in a program with the Orange County Department of Health to sample the influent flow to the wastewater treatment plant for indicators of COVID-19 in the population,” he said. “It is believed that this data can be used to predict surges of the virus in populations before the outbreak occurs.”

The testing will take place twice per week, Venning said.
