POUGHKEEPSIE – A teen who was shot last week at 51 Lent Street in Poughkeepsie was possibly the intended victim again on Monday when a shot was fired in his direction. On Monday, city police responded to a report of a shot being fired in the teen’s direction as he was arriving home with his family at approximately 7:46 p.m. on September 6.

Police were told that Monday’s gunshot came from a vehicle and responded to the area of Lent and Bement Streets to investigate. A vehicle matching the description was located by police in the vicinity of 130 Thompson Street and they conducted a traffic stop. Officers found two city residents inside. The police searched the vehicle and found an illegal handgun in the car.

Officers arrested the two occupants – 24-year-old Rashawn Murdoch and 28-year-old Jateek Owens – as a result of the investigation. Murdoch has been charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon and Owens was arrested on a probation warrant. The vehicle was impounded by the police.

City Councilwoman Yvonne Flowers has been out in the neighborhood working to stem the violence plaguing the area of Lent and Bement Streets. “The police have been working hard,” she said. “Their quick response and diligent work on Monday was great.” Flowers noted that the community needs to work with the police to keep the city safe.
